Our Thoughts…

We spent a chilly (yet gloriously sunny) January Sunday taking to arms in this experience recreating sword combat of centuries past. It’s a thrilling opportunity to try our hand with various styles of weapons and shields. Every attempt is made by UK Active Outdoors to make the experience enjoyable and safe by providing well-maintained kit, including body protection. The weapons on offer are all dummy versions of the real things made from rigid plastic and stiff foam. You won’t be cut, but can still leave a bruise if you don’t temper your swings and lunges!

Only two of us were present on the day; likely due to the time of year! This gave us the benefit of the brilliant guidance from our instructor all to ourselves. Firstly we were talked through each style of weapon form in turn, and given immediate opportunity to whack each other with them in friendly points-based rounds. UK Active Outdoors offer foam-sheathed short swords, cutlasses, axes, shields, and short/long sword pairs. We were given as much instruction as we sought and then were otherwsie free to use them as we felt was best or just most enjoyable.

When we could manage to wrench ourselves away from the excitement of battle, there was time to bask in the stunning setting of the area. The grounds are nestled in the Somerset countryside between Bristol and Bath, sourounded by rolling grassland, copses, and the River Avon – or one of the river Avons at least. We had no issues finding the site with our sat-nav, not far off Bath Road. A true hidden gem.

All weapons, body armour, and helmet are provided by UK Active Outdoors. They only suggest attendees wear full sleeves and trousers to cover up the gaps in the armour. None of the weapons will break skin, but, if nothing else, it stops you getting muddy from the arena floor! Other activites are also available here; given it was a quiet day with no other events, we were lucky enough to be offered a go at Combat Archery as well! More on that later…
